Fire Safety Alert: Using Space Heaters Safely

As winter approaches, many people rely on space heaters to stay warm. However, firefighters want to emphasize that space heaters should never be plugged into power strips.

Why?
Power strips are not designed to handle the high electric current that space heaters require. This can lead to overheating and potentially cause fires. For example, a fire in Toledo, Ohio, was ignited when a heater, not plugged in correctly, set a sofa on fire. Space heaters can reach temperatures as high as 600°F, making proper use crucial.

Safety Tips for Using Space Heaters:

  1. Plug Directly into Wall Outlets: Always connect your space heater directly to a wall socket.
  2. Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep a clearance of at least three feet around heaters to avoid fires.
  3. Supervise Heaters: Never leave heaters unattended while they are operating.
