To be honest, I’ve never been a fan of bugs. While many people find insects intriguing or even beautiful, some are downright terrifying. And then there are those that are not just bothersome but potentially harmful to humans, animals, plants, and crops. Normally, I’d avoid harming any living thing unless absolutely necessary. However, the lanternfly, scientifically known as Lycorma delicatula, is an exception.

Why You Should Act Quickly

As soon as you spot a lanternfly, it’s crucial to act promptly. Trust me, I’ve had firsthand experience dealing with these pests in my own garden. Their vibrant colors and distinctive patterns might make them seem almost attractive as they swarm around your plants, but don’t be fooled—these insects are quite destructive.

What Is a Lanternfly?

Despite its charming name, the lanternfly is a significant nuisance. First identified in Pennsylvania in 2014, this invasive species from China has been wreaking havoc on crops and ecosystems across several states. They pose a threat to both commercial growers and hobbyists with garden plants.

The Damage They Cause

Lanternflies feed on the sap of a variety of plants and trees. During this process, they excrete a sticky, sweet substance called honeydew. This not only damages the plant but also promotes the growth of sooty mold, which can suffocate the plant by blocking sunlight and hindering photosynthesis. I’ve watched as my once-vibrant maple leaves became dull and dark due to this mold.
