Here’s the right way to dispose of an American flag

The American flag, a powerful symbol of our nation’s freedom, history, and values, deserves respectful treatment not only while it’s flying, but also at the end of its service. When a flag is worn, tattered, or otherwise no longer fit to serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be retired in a dignified manner.

The United States Flag Code
The United States Flag Code establishes guidelines for the display and care of the American flag. According to Title 4, Section 8k of the Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
However, this does not mean you can simply set an old flag on fire in a backyard bonfire. The Code suggests that the ceremony of retirement be conducted with respect and honor. There are several methods to retire an American flag properly.
1. Organize a Retirement Ceremony
American Legion posts, Boy Scout Troops, Girl Scout Troops, and other patriotic organizations often host flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day (June 14) or other significant days. These events are performed with the utmost respect and often have a specific protocol, including:
1. Folding the flag in the traditional triangular fold.
2. Explaining the symbolism of the flag and the importance of the ceremony.
3. Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and holding a moment of silence.
4. Burning the flag completely in a ceremonial fire.
5. Collecting the ashes and burying them afterwards.
